Map Making: an overview of GIS concepts and requirements

Talk Summary:

A GIS (geographical information system) comprises a set of applications for working with geographic data. This session will briefly introduce three Windows-based desktop applications in ArcView 9.1, the most widely used GIS produced by ESRI. Using these applications and their interfaces in unison (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox), one can perform simple to advanced GIS tasks including mapping, geographic analysis, data management, visualization, and geoprocessing. We will also discuss how organizations and individuals are authoring, sharing, managing, and publishing geographic data and knowledge.

Speaker Biography:

Valerie Lim is a Research Associate of Global Mapping International. She is based in Singapore. Trained in Analytical Chemistry and Systems Analysis, Valerie has worked for many years in multi-disciplinary research, project management, staff development and training. Since 1998, she has prepared hundreds of maps on Asia and conducted training workshops for GIS users.
